Defined Contribution Health Insurance Plans

Businesses want their employees to have access to high quality health care, but the cost of insurance coverage is becoming progressively unaffordable to everyone.  Most businesses are moving away from  "Defined Benefits" toward "Defined Contribution" models.

With Defined Benefit plans, employers select health benefit options for their employees.  Typically, employers choose group coverage based primarily on cost, and more often than not employees are offered few if any choices.

With Defined Contribution plans, employers contribute a predetermined amount toward an employee’s purchase of health coverage (the amount may vary according to employee age or type of coverage etc. within certain limits).

Employees choose their coverage from a wider selection of differing options.  If an employee chooses a more expensive plan, then he or she must pay the difference between what the employer contributes and the actual cost of the benefit.

Defined Contribution health insurance plans allow employers to continue to provide financial support for health insurance while giving employees a much wider choice of health insurance options.

With defined contribution plans employees decide what they want or need, not their employers choosing for them!

Understanding Your Insurance Needs

To get a Health Savings Account you must first obtain a specific type of high deductible health insurance called HSA qualifying insurance or a high deductible health plan (HDHP). This can be done either as an individual or through employer sponsored group insurance coverage.

The HDHP must meet certain Federal requirements in order to qualify an owner (see our presentation: Overview of High Deductible Health Plans, or go to the Federal Employee Health Benefits HSA/HDHP info website)

To find out about opening an HSA go to our HSA Page.

Some employers may choose to implement a Defined Contribution plan at the same time as they begin offering HSA qualifying insurance?

Once one has the qualifying HDHP insurance, then opening a Health Savings Accounts (previously called Archer Medical Savings Accounts) is next.

Making all the right choices for yourself, your family, and your employees can be complicated.  Why not let us help you properly examine all your options?

Consumer Directed Health Care, Inc. does not sell HSA qualifying insurance, but we do have relationships with some of the most experienced professionals specializing in this area.

For HSA qualifying  insurance, please send our associated broker an inquiry or get quotes from insurers online (Laura Knight, Independent Insurance Broker of record, License #0C09338).

Laura S. Knight , LCSW, Licensed Independent Insurance Broker (Life Agent) of Record (CA#:0C09338)

Consumer Directed Health Care, Inc. does not sell health insurance.  However, we do have an associated independent health insurance broker representing the client's interests first.

Mrs. Knight specializes in HSA qualifying insurance plans in both  the individual and group markets, including defined contribution benefit design.  She currently does business only in California.  Remember, HSA qualifying high deductible health insurance premiums are significantly less expensive, so many brokers do NOT "recommend" HSA qualifying coverage, primarily because this kind of coverage produces much smaller commissions (commissions are usually paid as a percentage of premium).

If you are looking for coverage outside of California, we can usually connect prospective clients from other states to independent HSA insurance specialists that can assist you where you live.   (Please send us a message if you live outside of California):
